Friends’ AGM on 13 March: heavyweight speakers expected to attract a big audience


Notice has been given of the Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands.

Date: Wednesday, 13 March 2019
Time: 7:30pm for 8:00pm
Venue: Wanstead Golf Club, Overton Drive, London E11 2LW

The evening will open with an update from the Chairman followed by a brief business meeting, which should last no more than 30 minutes. All interested local residents are welcome. There will be a cash bar.

Members wishing to nominate members for election to the Committee, propose changes to the constitution or suggest items for discussion shall submit details by email via info@friendswansteadpark.wpcomstaging.com, having obtained the support of a named second member. Where nominating a candidate for election to the Committee, they should forward the written consent of the nominee within two weeks of the date on the notification. As usual, nominations for election, or offers to serve as co-opted members, will be accepted from the floor of the meeting.

In advance of the date of the AGM, all members will receive a full agenda and links to all papers for the meeting on the Friends’ website.

On this occasion the Friends will be delighted to welcome two high-profile guest speakers:

  • Colin Buttery, the City of London’s Director of Open Spaces, and
  • Nicholas Munday, the new Verderer representing the southern part of Epping Forest.

Geoff Sinclair, Epping Forest’s Operations Manager, will also be available to answer questions on the Wanstead Park regeneration project.

Other news –

The Temple in Wanstead Park has moved to more restricted opening hours. In the coming months it will be open from 10am to 3pm on the following days: Saturday 23 March, Sunday 24 March, Saturday 20 April, Sunday 21 April, Saturday 18 May and Sunday 19 May. Entry remains free of charge. Volunteers to assist and support Epping Forest staff on open days would be very welcome. Please email us if you are interested, and we will pass your details on.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Overton Drive, has been the site of Christian worship in Wanstead for at least eight centuries. It is also an integral part of the Wanstead Park historic landscape and has close links to the families who once owned it. The Parish of Wanstead has recently announced a series of Open Days in which the church can be visited. Those so far confirmed are 16 March and 20 April 11:00-3:00. Membership renewals

The Friends have moved from a rolling renewal process to one where annual subscriptions all fall due on 1 January for those who joined before September 2018. We will be contacting those whose subscriptions are in arrears, but it would be appreciated if you could renew directly via the website. In the event of any queries, please email us.

Forthcoming events

St Gabriel’s Church, 12 Aldersbrook Road, E12 5HH, will be holding its Annual Charity Coffee Morning between 10:30 and 12:30 on Saturday 2 March. The Friends will have a stall with our current range of merchandise as well as craft goods for sale. Please feel free to come along and say hello. A Charity Quiz has been arranged at the Bowls Club, Aldersbrook Road, E12 5DY, for 8:00pm on 16 March. The organisers have very kindly offered to share the proceeds between the Friends of Wanstead Parklands and Contact the Elderly.
